Five Rules for Assigning Oxidation States

Rules 1–5 are hierarchical. If any two rules conflict, follow the rule that is higher on the list.

(1) The oxidation state of an atom in a free element is 0.

(2) The oxidation state of a monoatomic ion is equal to its charge.
