Resonance: Equivalent Lewis Structures for the

Same Molecule

• Either one of the two Lewis structures for SO2 would predict that SO2 would contain two different kinds of bonds (one double bond and one single bond).
• When we examine SO2 in nature, we find that both of the bonds are equivalent and intermediate in strength and length between a double bond and single bond.
